Chapter 16

An American’s View of Trans* Emergence in Africa and Feminist Rebodies in resistancesponses,

by Chloe Schwenke

“The contribution by Chloe Schwenke explores a very personal story of bodies in resistance with her view of transgender emergence in Africa and feminist responses. She explores the emergence of a new demographic – African trans feminist – and considers the relationship between African transgender activists and African feminists in comparison with similar relationships and frameworks in the USA. She describes a growing community of male-to-female transgender Africans that is emerging as a new social movement and gaining its own identity. Speaking as a transgender activist from the USA working in solidarity with transgender people globally, she sets out seven areas she sees as being key to understanding feminism and transgender activism in political, cultural, civic and academic conversations .”
